What is Hausik Moni?

There are many hidden costs and expenses associated with staying in a hospital. As a patient, you need to be able to continue supporting yourself and your family when you get sick or injured.

This becomes difficult as receiving medical care starts to consume more of your time and money. That’s where Hausik Moni comes in. Hausik (hospital) Moni (money) is an insurance product that pays policyholders a certain amount of cash for each day of their hospitalisation.

This cash, which becomes available starting on the patient’s second day, can be used to cover a range of expenses, from food to medication. Ultimately, it’s up to the policyholder to decide how they want to use their hospital money.

With a policy from Trans Pacific Assurance Limited, you’ll receive K200 for each day you spend as a patient in a Papua New Guinea hospital.

Why is Hausik Moni important?

If you’re like the vast majority of Papua New Guineans, you rely on the public hospital system for medical care in the event of an emergency. Staying in these hospitals overnight for just a couple of days will be expensive, even without factoring in any of the care you’ll receive.

Let’s use a common real-life example to illustrate the importance of acquiring a Hausik Moni policy: One day, you’re at rugby training and you receive a hard tackle, causing multiple broken bones. So you head straight to the nearest hospital to seek care, and the doctors tell you that you’ll likely have to stay there for the next five days.  Your Hausik Moni can then be used to cover the cost of actual services, like X-rays and surgeries, as well as everything else, from supplies to loss of income.

Purchase supplies for your hospitalisation

Patients in Papua New Guinea’s public hospitals are expected to pay for their own food and other supplies during their stay. When you’re not being treated by doctors and nurses, you can use your Hausik Moni to pay for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Obviously you won’t be able to cook your own meals during hospitalisation, so you’ll have to get your food from the hospital or exterior vendors instead. If you’re unable to get out of your hospital bed, you can have friends and family purchase food for you using your hospital cash.

There are many other supplies that are necessary for staying comfortable during hospitalisation. Some of the items you’ll want to bring along include extra clothes, toiletries, headphones, books, movies, pyjamas, slippers, blankets and pillows. Staying in a hospital can result in a lot of physical and mental stress, so it’s important to make your surroundings as pleasant as possible. Again, the policyholder can decide exactly how they want to use the funds. So once you are hospitalised, you can make a list of the items you want for the next several days, then use your hospital cash to pay for them.

Get the medication you need

Hausik Moni can also be used to pay for medication that isn’t provided by the hospital. It’s common for public hospitals in Papua New Guinea to run out of certain drugs and medicines, leaving patients with the burden of purchasing them externally. This can get rather pricey, which is why it’s so important to have financial support during hospitalisation. Without it, you could get stuck paying out of pocket for extremely expensive painkillers, antibiotics, mood stabilisers and other medications.

Let’s say you just got finished with knee surgery and are in a considerable amount of pain, so the doctor writes you a prescription for oxycodone. In this scenario, you could use your hospital cash to purchase the prescribed drugs from a local chemist.

Manage your loss of income

When you are hospitalized for an extended period of time, you risk losing the income that helps support you and your family. After all, if you’re not working, you’re not getting paid. Hausik Moni is a solution to this problem, since you can use it to continue paying rent, bills and other expenses that are usually covered with the money you earn from working. This kind of financial protection is especially important when you’re the main source of income in your household.

If you become seriously ill and end up spending weeks in the hospital, you won’t have to worry about a sudden loss of income. You can focus on getting better while your hospital cash helps you stay on top of financial obligations.

Protect your savings

Like other forms of insurance, the most meaningful benefit of Hausik Moni is not having to dip into your savings when the unexpected happens. The cost of food, supplies and medications can rise quickly during hospitalisation. And without some level of financial security, you’ll be stuck paying for everything out of your own pocket. This could mean spending money that was being saved for important life events, like getting married, buying a home, retiring and so on.
